Domestic rats are prone to various genetic disorders due to interbreeding. They can also have infections; this is why when you buy a rat it should be isolated from other animals for at least 4 weeks. Adult rats tend to become obese and should be given only special food for rats or whole-wheat bread, cereals, fruits, vegetables and yogurt. Avoid candies, chocolate, cookies, chips and other "junk food."
Another problem with domestic rats is that their incisor teeth will grow continually for the animal's life. Hereditary abnormalities and injuries of the jawbones can add to the problem. Animals with such problems should be taken to the vet to trim their overgrown incisors.
Rats are susceptible to developing tumors, both benign and malignant. If you discover an unusual lump or bump on the rat's body, let a vet see it. Perhaps it needs to be surgically removed. If a rat is sniffing or sneezing and has red-brown tears and shows difficulties with breathing, it may be ill with chronic murine pneumonia or another infectious disease. If your pet has parasites (mites, lice or pinworms), they are sometimes very difficult to eliminate, but transmissions of these parasites from rats to people are very rare.
